Spacecraft test technicians perform tests on crew cabins, space station components, rockets, satellites, and any other type of vehicle or technology designed to fly in space. They use basic hand tools, electrical test equipment (multimeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, spectral analyzers, etc.), various types of specialized software, and visual and physical inspection of components and systems to ensure that they are functioning as designed. If they identify an issue, they document the issue and work with engineers, software developers, and other technicians to fix the problem or replace the malfunctioning part or circuit.
Spacecraft test technicians may be generalists or specialized workers who focus on a specific component, system, or functional area (such as fuel, software, or navigation). For example, avionics test technicians evaluate the performance of communication, navigation, and other systems that are a vital part of spacecraft. Propulsion test technicians conduct research to develop new sources of fuel for use in aerospace, as well as try to improve existing fuels. Materials test technicians evaluate and assess various materials—plastics, metals, ceramics, and composites—to determine if they can hold up in the demanding conditions of space. They also try to identify new materials that are lighter, more durable, or otherwise offer the potential for improvement from existing resources. Fairing test technicians inspect and assess the condition of the payload fairing, which protects the spacecraft from aerodynamic and atmospheric forces that could affect it.
In addition to performing tests, spacecraft test technicians evaluate test data and provide feedback to engineers; assist in the design and fabrication of test fixtures, test setups, and test stands; ensure that test equipment is maintained and calibrated, as well as track the calibration schedule; develop best practices and training manual for testing departments; and maintain test logs and other data for reference by engineers, the lead technician, and other aerospace professionals.
