Stenographers

Exploring This Job

Obtain experience in the stenography field by assuming clerical and typing responsibilities with a school club or other organization. In addition, some school work-study programs may have opportunities with businesses for part-time, on-the-job training. It may also be possible to get a part-time or summer job in a business office by contacting offices directly. Another good idea is to get training in word processing software and office machinery through evening or continuing education courses offered by business schools and community colleges.

Additionally, the National Court Reporters Association offers DiscoverSteno (https://www.ncra.org/home/start-your-career/discoversteno), a useful Web site that provides more information about education and careers in court reporting or captioning.

Other ways to learn more about stenography careers include participating in information interviews and job-shadowing experiences with stenographers to learn more about the field.
