Appraisers and assessors have a variety of working conditions, from the comfortable offices where they write and edit appraisal reports to outdoor construction sites, which they visit in both the heat of summer and the bitter cold of winter. Many appraisers spend mornings at their desks and afternoons in the field. Growth in computer and wireless Internet technologies is allowing many assessors and appraisers to spend more time in the field and away from their offices. Experienced appraisers may need to travel out of state.
Appraisers and assessors who work for a government agency or financial institution usually work 40-hour weeks, with overtime when necessary. Self-employed appraisers, often known as independent fee appraisers, typically work longer hours, but have the flexibility to set their own schedules.
Appraisal is a very people-oriented occupation. Appraisers must be unfailingly cordial, and they have to deal calmly and tactfully with people who challenge their decisions (and are usually angry). Appraising can be a high-stress occupation because a considerable amount of money and important personal decisions ride on appraisers' calculations.
