It was in the late 1960s that the integration of mechanical systems and electronics engineering was coined as mechatronics, named by Japanese engineer Tetsuro Mori. Until then, industrial equipment and products were created with mechanical components, and very few had electronic systems. The development of computers, hardware and software programs, and computer-controlled systems and devices focused engineers' and industrial designers' attention on advancing the integration of mechanical and electronic components. Since the 1960s, they have engineered smaller, more advanced semiconductors, which has resulted in electromechanical systems that have improved manufacturing systems' operations while reducing production costs.
Electromechanical engineering technologists today work on electromechanical systems for a wide variety of manufacturing products and equipment, including aircraft flight control and navigation systems, artificial organs and biomedical equipment, copy machines and optical telecommunication technology, and gas/electric-hybrid vehicles and robotic automated manufacturing systems, to name only a few.
