Energy Brokers

Education and Training Requirements

High School

A well-rounded education is a good foundation for future energy broker work. Take classes in mathematics, science, social sciences, business, and English. Energy brokers use various software programs in their work so be sure to take computer classes.

Postsecondary Education

A bachelor's degree is required for most energy broker positions. Many brokers have a degree in business, economics, finance, marketing, or in the field related to the energy products and services that are sold. College courses include marketing, business management, economics, communications, mathematics, and English. Foreign language classes are also useful.

Other Education or Training

Many organizations—such as the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, Association of Energy Engineers, Global Association of Risk Professionals, National Energy Marketers Association, The Energy Professionals Association, and the Association of Energy Conservation Professionals—offer conferences, seminars, webinars, and other continuing education (CE) opportunities. Contact these organizations for more information.
