Geothermal Technicians

Outlook

The U.S. Department of Labor predicts average employment growth for installation, maintenance, and repair workers (all others not listed) through 2033. Geothermal technicians with prior work experience and strong knowledge of geothermal power equipment and systems will have the best job prospects.

Development of geothermal energy has slowed recently due to changes in the U.S. government and environmental policies and accords. The government has made the process of obtaining geothermal land leases complicated and lengthy. Another factor that is not helping the geothermal industry is declining prices for fossil fuel substitutes like natural gas and tax incentives that favor other renewables over geothermal power.

When the permitting processes for geothermal power plants are eventually eased, there will be greater need for geothermal production managers and other workers. Job opportunities will increase as geothermal resources are developed and new power plants are built. Geothermal technicians will find more job opportunities in the western United States.
