Methane/Landfill Gas Generation System Technicians

Education and Training Requirements

High School

A good foundation for future landfill gas system technician work includes classes in biology, chemistry, physics, environmental studies, mathematics (algebra, geometry), and computer science. Shop classes are important for understanding how machines and systems operate. Clear communication skills are also important in this job, particularly for accurately recording data and writing reports, so be sure to take English and communication classes.

Postsecondary Education

Many employers prefer to hire methane/landfill gas generation system technicians who hold a degree from a vocational school or have an associate's or bachelor's degree. Degree programs may be in environmental science, industrial management, industrial engineering, or a related field. Other areas of study may be in operations management and supervision; logistics, materials, and supply chain management; or in business/commerce or business management.

Continuing Education

Methane/landfill gas generation system technicians must keep their knowledge and skills up to date throughout their careers. The Solid Waste Association of North America offers classes and training on landfill gas collection and treatment systems. Classes cover topics such as leachate management and treatment, landfill operations and basics, and landfill operations management. Find information at https://swana.org.
