Columnists

Columnists work mostly indoors in newspaper or magazine offices, although they may occasionally conduct interviews or do research on location out of the office. The exception are nature, environmental, and some sports columnists, who spend a considerable amount of time outdoors as they research columns. Columnists may work as much as 48 to 52 hours a week. Some columnists do the majority of their writing at home or in a private office, and come to the newsroom primarily for meetings and to have their work approved or changed by editors. The atmosphere in a newsroom is generally fast paced and loud, so columnists must be able to concentrate and meet deadlines in this type of environment.

This work can be stressful at times—especially for political, health, and other columnists who write about controversial or hot-button issues—as a result of negative and sometimes even vitriolic responses from readers. Columnists must be able to insulate themselves from negative feedback in order to be able to effectively do their jobs.
