Cosmetologists

Outlook

The future looks good for cosmetology. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, employment for hairdressers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists is expected to increase 8 percent from 2018 to 2028, or faster than the average for all careers. The growing U.S. population and changes in hair fashion (including rising demand for hair coloring, hair straightening, and other advanced hair treatments) will contribute to the demand for cosmetologists. In addition, turnover in this career is fairly high as cosmetologists move up into management positions, change careers, or leave the field for other reasons. Cosmetologists new to the field will have better chances to find work, whereas competition for more experienced cosmetology positions at higher paying, prestigious salons will be strong.
