Directors of Volunteers

History

Ever since the first nonprofit organizations were founded, volunteers have been needed to help these organizations meet their goals. The management of volunteers in small organizations was usually handled by one or more individuals in the organization in addition to their primary job duties. But in large foundations with significant budgets and many projects, managers soon realized that they needed a trained professional to recruit, train, and place volunteers to best serve the needs of the organization. This led to the creation of the career of director of volunteers.
