Directors of Volunteers

Work Environment

The work environment for directors of volunteers varies depending on several factors such as the size of the organization, its funding, and the scope and nature of its mission.

Directors of volunteers employed at organizations such as Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic or Art Institute Chicago work indoors. They audition, train, and schedule volunteers within the comfort of indoor recording studios.

Other organizations may require directors of volunteers to work both indoors and outdoors depending on the task at hand. Volunteer managers for the Desert Botanical Garden in Arizona, for example, may find themselves working inside comfortable offices one day, and outdoors in hot, dry weather the next. Indoor tasks may include screening and orienting volunteers, producing promotional materials to recruit new volunteers, event planning, and scheduling. Outdoor tasks may include working in the gardens alongside volunteer gardeners and landscapers, or managing volunteer shifts at a plant sale or seasonal festival.

Some travel to schools and libraries may be required to promote the organization's products and services and to recruit new volunteers.
