Directors of Volunteers

Outlook

Volunteering remains a popular activity. On an average day in the U.S. in 2022, more than 11 million people volunteered in some manner, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. As a result, employment for directors of volunteers should remain steady during the next decade.

Despite the fact that studies have shown that organizations with professional directors of volunteers raise more money and have a stronger volunteer base, the position is often the first to be cut when an organization's budget is tight. So if the economy slows again, and donations to nonprofits decline, employment opportunities for directors of volunteers will decline. Directors of volunteers with advanced training and experience will have the best employment prospects.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, employment of social and community service managers is projected to grow 8 percent from 2023 to 2033, faster than the average for all occupations. This growth will occur because of the increase in programs aimed to meet the needs of our aging population.
