The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) does not offer salary information for the career of driving school owners or instructors. It does note that self-enrichment teachers, a category which could include commercial driving instructors, earned a median annual salary of $45,330 in May 2023. The lowest 10 percent earned $28,600, and the top 10 percent earned $85,980 or more.

Driving instructors at public high schools who work as salaried educators have the same earnings as regular teachers. The median annual salary for secondary school teachers was $65,220 in May 2023, according to the DOL. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $48,040; the highest 10 percent earned $106,380 or more.

Full-time driving instructors who work for a company might receive benefits such as sick leave, health and life insurance, and vacation days. Driving school owners must provide their own benefits.
