Mechatronics Engineers

Outlook

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) does not provide an employment outlook for mechatronics engineers, but it does report that job opportunities in electrical, electronics, and mechanical engineering are expected to grow much faster than the average for all careers through through 2033. During the same timeframe, employment for hardware engineers will grow faster than the average, while software developers, a type of software engineer, will grow much faster than the average.

Job opportunities for mechatronics engineers should be good. As technology becomes more complex, skilled engineers will be needed to design and develop mechatronic systems for use in a variety of industries. Companies are seeking multifaceted engineers with knowledge of not just one discipline, but of several (such as electrical, mechanical, and computer engineering).

Mechatronics engineers with advanced degrees and experience working with mechatronics will have the best employment prospects. Emerging research trends in biomaterials, biomechanics and chemistry, and biology in general will bring new career opportunities in mechatronics engineering. As a result, engineers with training and experience in these areas will also be at an advantage.
