Steel Industry Workers

Exploring This Job

One of the best ways to learn about the steel industry is to visit a steel mill. If this is not feasible, you may be able to invite a union or industry representative to your school to speak with students about careers in the steel industry. Reading publications, such as Iron & Steel Technology (https://www.aist.org/Publications-Advertising/Iron-Steel-Technology), published by iron and steel associations is a good way to become more familiar with the industry and current trends.

Consider joining SkillsUSA (www.skillsusa.org), a national membership organization for middle school, high school, and college students who are interested in pursuing careers in technical, trade, and skilled service occupations. It offers the following competitions that will be of interest to aspiring steel industry workers: Automated Manufacturing Technology, CNC Programmer, Welding, and Welding Fabrication.
