Swimming Pool Designers

Education and Training Requirements

High School

In high school take as many art and computer-aided design (CAD) classes as you can to develop your creativity, learn design techniques, and use CAD software. Other useful classes include mathematics, physics, computer science, English, speech, and foreign language.

Postsecondary Education

There is no degree available in swimming pool design, but some people who work in this field earn bachelor’s degrees in industrial design, architecture, civil engineering, or a related field, and also participate in internships, co-ops, or other cooperative educational opportunities to gain experience and build their skills.

Some designers train for the field by participating in informal apprenticeships at swimming pool design firms.

Certification

Many colleges offer certificate programs (which typically last from six months to a year) in industrial design, CAD design, architecture, civil engineering, and related fields that will be useful to aspiring designers. Swimming pool designers who would like to open their own companies should consider earning certificates in entrepreneurism, business management, marketing, and other fields to expand their knowledge base.

Other Education or Training

Participating in continuing education (CE) classes is a great way to keep your skills up to date and learn about new developments in swimming pool design; CE credits may also be required to renew one’s certification. The Pool & Hot Tub Alliance offers courses on a variety of topics, including basic drawing, computer modeling, interacting with clients, outdoor design trends, and advanced water feature design.
