A designer who begins his or her career at the junior level can advance to become a full-fledged designer, and receive an increase in pay. Designers who have demonstrated strong design and leadership ability can be promoted to the position of design lead, who supervises other designers and collaborates with senior management and builders during projects. Some designers choose to launch their own businesses. This path can be rewarding and financially lucrative, but owning a business is hard work and requires expertise in business and financial management, sales, and marketing, among other skills.
