Aspiring designers obtain experience by participating in an internship, co-op, or other experiential learning opportunity with a company that designs and builds pools and spas.

Swimming pool designers must be experts at using computer-aided design software. They also must have comprehensive knowledge of the various types of construction materials and pool components, as well as the environmental factors that play a role in pool design and construction. In terms of soft skills, designers need to be top-notch communicators. They must be able to listen closely to the needs of clients and carefully explain design options and construction materials. Other important traits include strong time-management and organizational skills, attention to detail, creativity, the ability to think “outside the box,” patience, and flexibility.
