Collection Workers

Work Environment

Most collectors work in pleasant offices, sit at a desk, and spend a great deal of time on the telephone. Because they spend so much time on the phone, many collectors use phone headsets and program-operated dialing systems. The collection worker sits in front of a computer, reviewing and entering information about the account while talking to the debtor on the phone.

Rarely does a collector have to make a personal visit to a customer. Repossession proceedings are undertaken only in extreme cases.

Most collection workers work a 40-hour week, from 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday through Friday. Some collection workers stagger their schedules. They might start late in the morning and work into the evening, or they might take a weekday off and work on Saturday. Evening and weekend work is common, because debtors are often home during these times.
