Content Management Specialists

Experience, Skills, and Personality Traits

Any experience one can obtain in the field of content management—such as an internship, volunteer position, or lower-level job—will be useful. Many employers prefer applicants to have one to three years of experience using content management systems.

Content management specialists should have a comprehensive understanding of how content management systems work and the various proprietary and open-source systems that are available. They also need advanced knowledge of search engine optimization and marketing techniques, web analytics, and behavioral targeting techniques. Some employers prefer candidates who are familiar with HTML (Hypertext Markup Language), CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), and other core technologies for building Web pages.

Key personal traits for CMSs include excellent written and oral communications skills, the ability to work as a member of a team, attention to detail, strong multitasking skills, creativity, flexibility, a decisive personality, and top-notch organizational, time-management, and project management abilities.
