Gunsmiths

Gun shops and gunsmithing operations are usually clean, compact, and efficient. Many gunsmiths work in one-person operations such as a small shop at the back of a gun or sporting goods store. Others work in repair shops. Volatile solvents are used, so proper ventilation is necessary. Some of the machinery used can be noisy, as are firing ranges. Handling guns requires special attention and care. Safety precautions must be followed at all times to prevent accidental misfirings or exploding guns.

Some gunsmiths work a five-day, 40-hour week. Those who work for sporting goods stores may have to work at night or on weekends. Gunsmiths are on their feet most of the day, moving from their workbenches to different machines. The busiest time of the year for gunsmiths is just before and during hunting season, when many must work overtime.
