Jewelers and precious stone and metal workers had median annual earnings of $39,440 in May 2018, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Salaries ranged from less than $23,530 to more than $67,210. Those who worked at jewelry stores earned mean annual salaries of $67,250. Most jewelers start out with a base salary. With experience, they can charge by the number of pieces completed. Jewelers who work in retail stores may earn a commission for each piece of jewelry sold, in addition to their base salary. Self-employed designers and makers may sell their wares at jewelry shows, fairs, and other venues. Their salaries may vary according to the season.
