Military Recruiters

History

Military recruiters have encouraged people to join the armed forces since the Revolutionary War. During World War I, the iconic "I Want You for the U.S. Army" poster made its first appearance. The poster shows Uncle Sam, a man with a white beard and hat, dressed in red, white, and blue (a personification of the United States), pointing from the poster at readers in an attempt to induce them to join the military. The poster was also used during World War II, and is occasionally referenced in military recruiting ads today.

Recruiting has gone high tech since those days. Today, recruiters use print and broadcast advertisements, e-mails and text messages, and Web sites to reach potential recruits. They also try to reach potential military enlistees by visiting high schools, staffing booths at college fairs, traveling to college campuses, and working at recruiting centers.
