Motion Graphics Artists

Employment Prospects

Employers

Many MGAs work in the motion picture and video industries. Others work for advertising agencies, gaming companies, television stations, web development firms, software companies, and scientific and technical service agencies. Major companies or government agencies that employ MGAs include Google, Netflix, Apple, Meta, Amazon, Salesforce, Deloitte, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Industrial Light & Magic, and Cartoon Network.

Starting Out

It’s a good idea to start assembling a portfolio of your best motion graphics work while you’re still in school because employers will ask to see your portfolio (which should contain at least 10 examples of your work) when you apply for a job. Samples of your work can come from motion graphics classroom assignments, from part-time jobs and internships at motion graphics firms, and from your own artwork created in your free time. Some aspiring MGAs create their own Web sites, which feature samples of their work, a summary of their educational background and the software in which they are proficient, and other information. Some artists showcase their work at Web sites such as Behance.net.

Aspiring and current MGAs can obtain job leads through contacts made during internships and co-op experiences, by attending career fairs, by utilizing the resources of their school’s career services center, and by visiting the career Web sites of potential employers.
