Motion Graphics Artists

Experience, Skills, and Personality Traits

Aspiring MGAs need several years of experience in lower-level motion graphics positions or a bachelor’s degree plus practical experience via an internship, co-op, part-time job, or volunteer position.

Motion graphics artist must have an expert understanding of the software that is used to create motion graphics such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects; Ajax; Autodesk Maya; Apple Motion; Final Cut Pro; and Maxon Cinema4D. They also need a good understanding of color, typography, and sound usage; familiarity with music and sound effects libraries; and experience with variety of digital media workflows.

The most successful MGAs have excellent interpersonal and communication skills because they often work as a member of a team and must be able to explain their design ideas to colleagues, managers, and clients. Other important traits include creativity, imagination, flexibility, strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities, excellent time-management and organizational skills, the ability to multitask in a high-pressure work environment, confidence and pride in one’s work, and the ability to provide and receive feedback in a positive and constructive manner.
