Motion Graphics Artists

Exploring This Job

Begin familiarizing yourself with the work of MGAs by viewing artist portfolios. The Graphic Artists Guild offers access to the portfolios of its members at https://graphicartistsguild.org/guild-member-portfolios. Another recommended site is https://www.creativeboom.com/inspiration/20-motion-designers-and-animators-whose-work-you-cant-miss. The AIGA’s web page (https://www.aiga.org/motion) on motion design features a wealth of articles about the specialty. Motionographer.com is another excellent resource. It offers articles about the field, examples of award-winning motion design, and a jobs board, as well as sponsors The Motion Awards (https://motionawards.com), which celebrate the best examples of motion design.

Practice drawing by hand and learn how to use computer illustration and animation software. If you’ve already created motion graphics art, start developing a portfolio to show art school admissions officers and potential employers.

Attend summer graphics, digital, and multimedia exploration programs that are offered by colleges and universities, local art associations, park districts, and other providers.

Talk with an MGA about his or her work. Perhaps you could even job shadow a motion graphics artist to learn what a typical day is like on the job. Ask your art teacher or school counselor for help setting up an interview. If you can’t line up an interview or job shadowing experience, watch videos of MGAs on YouTube.
