Earnings

The field of nanosystems engineering is interdisciplinary by nature, and, hence, people from a variety of engineering disciplines work in the field. The U.S. Department of Labor reports the following starting salaries by engineering specialty:

  • chemical engineers: $75,650 to $176,420+
  • electrical engineers: $69,320 to $172,050+
  • industrial engineers: $65,320 to $142,220+
  • materials engineers: $63,340 to $165,580+
  • mechanical engineers: $64,560 to $157,470+
  • software engineers: $77,020 to $208,620+

Nanotechnology engineers earned average salaries of $95,023 in 2024, according to ZipRecruiter.com. This is much higher than the average for workers in all careers ($63,098, according to the DOL).

According to the National Nanotechnology Coordinated Infrastructure, nanotechnology professionals with master’s degrees earn salaries that range from $60,000 to $80,000, while those with Ph.D.s earn $75,000 to $150,000.
