The field of nanosystems engineering is interdisciplinary by nature, and, hence, students enter the field with degrees in a variety of engineering disciplines. The National Association of Colleges and Employers reports that the baccalaureate class of 2020 earned the following average starting salaries by engineering specialty:

  • Chemical engineering $73,719
  • Electrical engineering $72,518
  • Software engineering $72,307
  • Computer engineering $71,107
  • Mechanical engineering $69,913
  • Materials engineering/science $63,478

Nanotechnology engineers earned average annual salaries that ranged from $70,562 to $80,542 or more in April 2020, according to Indeed.com. The Department of Labor reports that materials engineers employed in the U.S. in May 2018 earned salaried that ranged from $57,110 to $148,110 or more.

Nanosystems engineers usually receive generous benefits, including vacation days, sick leave, health and life insurance, and a 401(k) or other retirement savings plan.
