Newspaper Editors

Outlook

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, employment for editors and writers is highly competitive, with job opportunities for newspaper editors projected to decline by 19.4 percent from 2023 through 2033. Opportunities will be better on small daily and weekly newspapers, where the pay is lower. Online publications are also expected to offer more opportunities for editors. Job opportunities for editors who are employed by media streaming distribution services, social networks, and other media networks and content providers are expected to increase by 6.4 percent from 2023 through 2033, which is faster than the average for all careers. Also, some publications hire freelance editors to support reduced full-time staffs (although employment for freelance editors is expected to decline by 17.6 percent through 2033). And, as experienced editors leave the workforce or move to other fields, job openings will occur. Newspaper editors with relevant experience and skills working with a variety of digital tools will have the best job prospects.
