Space Pilots

The ideal job candidate has at least two years of experience as a test pilot or in other pilot roles. A recent Virgin Galactic job advertisement for a pilot position listed the following requirements as desirable: “A minimum of 2.5 years post-graduate test pilot school flight test experience; a diverse flying background with at least 2,500 hours flying experience to include: multi-engine aircraft with asymmetric thrust performance and handling considerations; high-performance fast jet aircraft, and low lift-to-drag ratio glide experience (e.g., simulated flameout landings) in complex aircraft; and operational experience of a commercial aerospace aviation project or business. Previous experience in spaceflight and commercial flight operations with customer interaction is a plus … [because] pilots will be tasked with customer relations and that includes answering questions, addressing concerns, exuding confidence, and easing fears.”

A recent SpaceX pilot job advertisement listed the following abilities as being important: great interpersonal skills, team player, attention to detail, strong organizational skills, proactive personality, flexibility, personal ethics and integrity, discretion, and a willingness to work long hours and travel extensively. Other important traits include excellent communication skills, the ability to manage time effectively, and making well-reasoned decisions under pressure.
