Many space pilots work as test pilots, who operate experimental aircraft and other types of aircraft that are in development to ensure that they function effectively and can withstand the rigors of launch, orbit, and a return to Earth. Some test pilots operate spacecraft that transport passengers and/or equipment, supplies, and other cargo. Space pilots work with members of mission control to plan missions and ensure that the spacecraft and its crew are ready for the mission. During missions that transport space tourists, they maintain passenger safety, explain the flight process and spacecraft systems to passengers, and provide commentary at various points of the trip to improve the passenger experience. Pilots and other crew members are highly trained so that they are prepared to respond to passenger emergencies, as well as issues with aircraft systems. A pilot who navigates a spacecraft to the International Space Station (ISS) will ensure that passengers safely transit to the station and that all cargo is delivered. Some pilots help conduct experiments, and others participate in planned spacewalks to work outside the ISS to modify power systems or perform other duties.
During the return to Earth, pilots operate the spacecraft, monitor systems, respond to unexpected changes in system performance, engage in regular communication with mission control back on Earth, implement changes to the flight plan as directed by mission control, and, if transporting passengers, continue to provide customer service and education to provide a rewarding experience.
On-the-ground duties include working in mission control support roles, developing pilot and/or space tourist training programs, preparing reports and otherwise documenting the operation of the spacecraft during the mission (and reporting on any performance issues or other concerns), and supporting—as needed—their company’s safety, engineering, maintenance, marketing, and customer service departments.
