Fashion Models' Agents

Work Environment

The environment at a modeling agency is fast-paced and exciting. Most days vary in routine, which can be stressful at times. Agents' workspaces are usually clustered together, where comp boards or folios are easily within reach of an agent. Because of this, privacy is at a minimum.

Most agents work about 40 hours a week, Monday through Friday, in clean, well-lit, indoor offices. Their workspace includes a desk, computer, and telephone. Since a large part of the day is spent on the phone conferring with models and clients, some agents opt to wear headsets.

Some travel is expected. Modeling conventions and shows, where young people hope to attract agency attention, are scheduled year-round throughout the United States. An agency's presence at these events is important because agents need to keep abreast of new looks and faces coming onto the fashion scene. Agents also need to be aware of trendy social spots and events and frequently socialize after work. Many models have been "discovered" at dance clubs, restaurants, or high society parties.

While mixing with the fashion elite may seem glamorous and exciting, there is a downside. A small segment of the industry has a reputation for wild living, abusing alcohol and drugs. The agent who wants a long, successful career needs to be levelheaded and able to steer away from such pitfalls.
