Patent Agents

Outlook

Patent agents will continue to be needed to help people with the application process and to prosecute patent cases before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The number of patent applications has grown steadily over the years and is expected to continue growing. For example, in 2005, the USPTO received 207,867 applications for patents from U.S. inventors or companies; in 2018, approximately 285,095 patent applications had been submitted by U.S. inventors or companies. Inventors will need the assistance of patent agents to help them protect and defend the rights to their properties. The patent agent field is highly competitive, however. Those with expertise in the specialty they represent and who have a proven track record in securing patent grants and prosecuting patent cases will have the advantage in the job market.
