"The global demand for nuclear energy is rising rapidly and a new, next generation of reactors is on the horizon," the organization explained. "Domestic job demand will skyrocket if the U.S. can maintain its nuclear technology leadership in the global marketplace."

Nevertheless, the U.S. Department of Labor projects that employment of nuclear technicians will decline 6 percent through 2033. Although technicians will be needed for maintenance and upgrades to existing power plants, increased automation is making traditional power generation methods more productive. Additionally, wind, solar, and other types of alternative power generation are expected to affect employment growth as well.

However, job opportunities will be stronger in other areas, such as nuclear medical technology, waste management safety, environmental remediation, and defense (nuclear security). Employment growth for nuclear medicine technologists is expected to grow 7 percent through 2028, faster than the average for all occupations.
