The best way to learn more about this field is through firsthand experience. You can see if this type of work is for you through a part-time, summer, or volunteer job in a recreation department, neighborhood center, camp, or other recreation-oriented organization. It is essential to be comfortable with people, so take on any jobs or activities that will expose you to a variety of people. Also consider participating in clubs and other activities that will boost your proficiency in areas like crafts, sports, and music.

Participate in information interviews with recreation workers. In such an interview—which can be conducted in-person, on the phone, or through video-conferencing technology—you will get the opportunity to ask recreation workers about their job duties, work environment, likes and dislikes about their careers, educational training, and other topics that will help you to learn more about the field. Ask your school counselor or a teacher to help you set up information interviews.
