Automotive Engineering Technicians

Outlook

The U.S. Department of Labor reports the following employment outlooks for engineering technicians and technologists in motor vehicle manufacturing from 2022 through 2032:

  • industrial: +6.6 percent
  • electrical and electronics: +6.6 percent
  • mechanical: +1.3 percent
  • electro-mechanical and mechatronics: −0.8 percent

The automotive industry is strongly linked to the state of the U.S. economy, and there are typically more employment opportunities when the economy is strong. There will continue to be jobs for automotive engineering technicians, however, due to employees leaving the field for other positions or retiring from the profession, as well as demand (see above) for new workers in some specialties. Also, technicians who have strong knowledge of computer-aided design software and the latest technologies, and who are flexible to relocate for work, will have the advantage in the job market.
