Earnings vary widely, depending on the size and location of the catering operation and the skill and motivation of the individual entrepreneur. Many caterers charge according to the number of guests attending a function. Generally, the larger the event, the larger the profit. Earnings are also influenced by whether a caterer works full time or only part time. Even very successful caterers often work part time, working another job either because they enjoy it or to protect themselves against a possible downturn in the economy.

Full-time caterers can earn between $28,000 and $83,000 per year, depending on skill, reputation, and experience. An extremely successful caterer can earn more than $100,000 annually. A part-time caterer may earn $5,000 to $20,000 per year, subject to the same variables as the full-time caterer.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, food service managers, which include caterers, earned a median salary of $63,060 in 2023, with 10 percent earning less than $42,990 and the top 10 percent earning more than $101,240.

Because most caterers are self-employed, vacations and other benefits are usually not part of the wage structure.
