Chief Revenue Officers

Outlook

Employment for top executives is expected to decline from 2022 through 2032, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). The DOL says that "employment of chief executives is projected to decline as office technology improves, increasing the ability of these workers to perform tasks previously done by multiple chief executives. In addition, changing organizational structures may lead to fewer new jobs for these workers as more companies adopt a workplace structure with fewer chief executive positions." Job opportunities for general and operations managers are expected to increase by 4 percent during that time frame, which is about as fast as the average for all careers. These workers will continue to be needed as companies focus on maintaining and improving their operations.

The career of head of revenue operations (another name for chief revenue officers) was selected as the number one occupation by LinkedIn on its 2023 "Jobs on the Rise," list, which details the 25 fastest-growing job titles over the past five years. According to LinkedIn, top employment locations for CROs include San Francisco, New York City, Los Angeles.

Studies have found that the work of CROs generates considerable value for their employers. This suggests that demand for these workers may increase in the long term. A study by the consulting firm McKinsey & Company found that Fortune 100 companies that have a CRO-like role have 1.8-times higher revenue growth than companies that do not employ CROs or those in similar roles. "It’s not just the obvious growth that is motivating companies to add a CRO role," says McKinsey & Company. "Technology, led by generative AI, is changing the marketing, sales, and revenue playing field. But to fully unlock generative AI’s potential to seamlessly automate marketing and sales workflows at scale, someone is still required to oversee the end-to-end value chain and identify the full potential to be unlocked."

Competitions for jobs will be very strong—especially at top companies that offer high salaries and generous benefits plans. Chief revenue officers who have extensive experience of improving companies' revenue generation, coupled with an advanced degree, will have an edge in the job market.
