Film and Television Producers

Outlook

Employment for producers and directors in the motion pictures and video industries is expected to grow much faster than the average for all careers from 2023 through 2033, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Job opportunities with media streaming distribution services, social networks, and other media networks and content providers are expected to increase faster than average during this time span. Demand is growing from both U.S. and foreign-based audiences for movie and video content, which will create a need for more producers.

Employment for producers and directors in television broadcasting is expected to decline by 0.8 percent through 2033. Though new opportunities have emerged as a result of the expansion of online cable and satellite television and news programs, development of interactive media, and increases in mobile and online television, competition for jobs will remain very high. Freelance opportunities are expected as networks look to independent production companies for more programming. Some positions will also be available as current producers leave the workforce.
