Food Writers and Editors

Outlook

Employment for writers is expected to increase by 5 percent (about as fast as the average for all careers) from 2023 to 2033, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). Job opportunities for editors are expected to decline 2 percent through 2033, according to the DOL.

In general, online publications will offer the best job prospects for writers and editors. Job opportunities for writers who work for media streaming distribution services, social networks, and other media networks and content providers are expected to grow faster than the average through 2033. Much-faster-than-average employment growth is expected for writers who are employed by web search portals, libraries, archives, and other information services. Those who are comfortable writing and editing using a variety of digital tools will have better chances of finding work.

Individuals entering this field should realize that the competition for jobs is intense. Students just out of college may especially have difficulty finding employment. However, the subject of food and beverages continues to grow in popularity, thus providing more opportunities for those who wish to pursue a career in food writing and editing.
