Literary Agents

If you are interested in literary management, you can acquaint yourself with current trends in publishing and with the kinds of publications that particular publishing houses issue by working part time at bookstores and libraries. If you live in a big city, you may be able to get a job with a book or magazine publisher. Some literary agents also sponsor internships. You can also ask a school counselor or English teacher to arrange an information interview with a literary agent. Suggested interview questions include: What made you want to enter this career? What do you like most and least about your job? How did you train for this field? What are some key skills for success? What advice would you give to young people about preparing for the field and being successful on the job? How will advances in technology change the field? Perhaps you could even job-shadow a literary agent to learn even more about the field.
