Mobility managers conduct research and surveys and use other methods to gather information to better understand the needs of their clients, existing mobility transportation services, and how various transportation options can be used to provide efficient and cost-effective transportation services. Clients include people with disabilities, individuals with lower incomes, the elderly, military veterans who need services from the Veterans Administration or other providers, and others. Transportation options include buses, trains and other forms of rail transportation, taxis and ride-share services, bicycles, and water taxis.
Mobility managers collaborate and develop partnerships with transportation service providers, funders, and other entities to develop programs. They identify funding sources and apply for grants or other funding from government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and other providers. Mobility managers develop new strategies and programs to address service gaps; evaluate existing mobility programs in a geographic area to identify redundant programs; and incorporate customer feedback as services are launched, evaluated, and improved.
Mobility managers are also responsible for finding appropriate, affordable, and accessible transportation options from a network of service providers. They educate clients regarding transportation options.
Some mobility managers with technical ability develop mobility management systems. These systems consist of one-call/one-click centers, which help community members find information about transportation options, as well as mobility-as-a-service programs and digital tools, which allow end-to-end transportation journeys to be organized and paid for by making a single visit to a Web site or app.
Other duties for mobility managers include training staff and volunteers, managing volunteer driver programs, overseeing call centers, and presenting plans for new transportation programs at public meetings and to the media.
