Sports engineers are employed by professional sports teams and leagues, individual athletes, sporting goods companies, businesses that specialize in performance wearables or biomechanics, manufacturers, sports institutes, and construction companies. Some engineers operate their own consulting firms. Others teach students about various sports engineering topics at colleges and universities.

Starting Out

Many aspiring sports engineers begin their careers by working as engineers in traditional fields (e.g., civil, mechanical, electrical). They gradually obtain experience in sports engineering projects, as well as complete courses or minors, certificates, or advanced degrees in sports engineering. In time, they obtain enough experience to work full time in the field.

Sports engineers can learn about job openings by attending career fairs and other networking events, using the services of an executive recruiter, and by contacting potential employers about potential job opportunities.
