Sports Engineers

Job opportunities for sports engineers should be good during the next decade as the public’s interest in athletics increases and advances in technology continue to create new design and product options. Employment for engineers in the spectator sport industry is expected to grow by 10.6 percent from 2024 through 2034, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. This is much faster than the average for all careers. Slower-than-average growth is expected for engineers who are employed by sporting goods retailers during this same time span. Sports engineers with considerable experience and a familiarity with emerging technology (e.g., artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual reality) will have the best job prospects.
