Outlook

Employment for craft and fine artists and graphic designers is expected to grow as fast as the average for all occupations through 2032. Because many are usually self-employed, much of their success depends on the amount and type of work created, the drive and determination in selling the artwork, and the interest or readiness of the public to appreciate and purchase the work. Continued population growth, higher incomes, and increased appreciation for fine art will create a demand for visual artists.

The outlook for multimedia artists is bright, with faster than average employment growth through 2032. High demand for animation and visual effects in video games, movies, and television, as well as graphics for mobile devices is expected to drive job growth for multimedia artists in the coming years.

Success for an artist, however, is difficult to quantify. Individual artists may consider themselves successful as their talent matures and they are better able to present their vision in their work. This type of success goes beyond financial considerations. Few artists enter this field for the money. Financial success depends on many factors, many of which have nothing to do with the artist or his or her work. Artists with good marketing skills or the ability to hire someone with marketing expertise will likely be the most successful in selling their work. Although artists should not let their style be dictated by market trends, those interested in financial success can attempt to determine what types of artwork the public wants.

It often takes several years for an artist's work and reputation to be established. Many artists have to support themselves through other employment. Employment opportunities for commercial artists can be found in such fields as publishing, advertising, fashion and design, entertainment, and teaching, although there is strong competition from others who are attracted to these fields. Freelancers may have difficulty selling their work until they establish their artistic reputation. Artists skilled in digital design will have an edge.

This occupation may be affected by the amount of funding granted by the government. The National Endowment for the Arts, for example, awards grants and funding to help talented artists hone their craft.
