Criminal Lawyers

Outlook

Employment for lawyers is expected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations through 2033, according to U.S. Department of Labor. It reports that “demand for legal work is expected to continue as individuals, businesses, and all levels of government require legal services in many areas.” However, law firms may scale back on staffing projects to reduce costs to clients and an increase in automation or outsourcing of routine legal work may affect employment opportunities in the coming years.

The employment outlook for prosecutors is expected to remain stable during the next decade. Most positions open as a result of existing prosecutors leaving the field. Opportunities will be best at the local level, where there is more turnover. Prosecutors with experience overseeing large jurisdictions will have the best employment prospects.

Defense lawyers and public defenders will continue to be in demand over the next decade. Most opportunities for public defenders will be available as a result of public defenders retiring or leaving the field for other reasons.
