Fish and Game Wardens

Outlook

Employment for fish and game wardens is expected to decline by 5 percent from 2033 through 2028, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. This is a small field. There are only about 6,800 fish and game wardens in the United States, and only about 250 special agents work for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the largest employer of fish and game wardens. As a result, there is strong competition for jobs at the federal, state, and local levels.

As with any career with government agencies, the potential for growth depends a lot on the political climate and what the views are of those in power, whether on a national or local level. When government funding is available, there will be more opportunities for fish and game wardens.
