The U.S. Department of Labor reports that leather tanning and finishing workers earned mean annual salaries of $47,330 in May 2023, plus extra pay for overtime, weekend, and holiday work. This was lower than the average ($65,470) for all U.S. occupations. Salaries ranged from minimum wage ($15,080 a year) to $75,000 or more. The U.S. Department of Labor reports the following mean annual earnings for leather and hide tanning and finishing workers by specialty in May 2023:

  • first-line supervisors of production and operating workers: $67,720
  • inspectors, testers, sorters, samplers, and weighers: $39,940
  • cutters and trimmers, hand: $39,880
  • cutting and slicing machine setters, operators, and tenders: $38,700

Most workers receive good fringe benefits that include life and health insurance, paid vacations, paid holidays, and often pension plans.
