History
Ever since people began to use animals for food, they have used animal skins to make clothing, coverings, and tools. Primitive hunters clothed themselves in hides, communicated with each other using hide-covered drums, and traversed waterways in hide-covered canoes. In ancient civilizations, people wore leather sandals and went to war bearing hide shields and multilayered leather armor. Valued for its beauty, strength, and durability, leather has remained one of the world's most popular materials. Modern processing methods have given us leathers of increased softness, strength, and flexibility.
