Legal Secretaries

Earnings

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the average salary for legal secretaries was approximately $50,680 in May 2023. Salaries ranged from less than $34,780 to more than $82,890. Fifty percent of legal secretaries earned between $41,450 and $66,510. Legal secretaries who were employed by local government agencies earned average annual salaries of $54,000, while those who worked for insurance companies earned $62,490.

An attorney's rank in the firm will also affect the salary of his or her legal secretary; secretaries who work for a partner will earn higher salaries than those who work for an associate. Certified legal secretaries generally receive higher pay.

Most law firms provide employees with sick days, vacation days, and holidays. Health insurance, 401(k) plans, and profit sharing may be offered as well. Some law firms offer in-house training or pay for off-site classes to help legal secretaries hone their secretarial skills.
