Legal Secretaries

Outlook

The U.S. Department of Labor predicts that employment for legal secretaries will decrease 5 percent between 2023 and 2033 because technology has replaced much of the work they once performed, including document filing and preparation.

The staffing firm Robert Half predicts a more optimistic employment outlook for legal secretaries, including the career in its 2025 list of the hottest legal jobs. Opportunities will be best in legal areas that are experiencing strong growth. Robert Half identified the following "in-demand" legal practice areas in its Legal Salaries and Hiring Trends 2025 Salary Guide: ethics and corporate governance; family law; labor and employment law; litigation; and privacy, data security, and information law. Legal secretaries who work for firms that specialize in these areas may have better employment prospects than those who work in other specialties. Additionally, Robert Half reports that the following industries will offer the best employment prospects: financial services, government, health care, and manufacturing.

Technological advances in recent years have revolutionized traditional secretarial tasks such as typing or keeping correspondence. The use of e-mail, scanners, the Internet, and advanced AI will make secretaries more productive in coming years. The downside to these advancements is a possible decrease in demand: Fewer workers are needed to do the same workload.
